‘A few weeks before this shoot I was called a pervert by some kids while I kissed someone on a date. I thought about how often the word pervert had been thrown at me as a queer person. I think that, subconsciously, was the framework for this character. I wanted to create a dichotomy between the cliche idea of a pervert; the old guy sitting on a street corner with a Foster's in his hand, and the experience of a dyke merely existing in the world and being seen as a sexual deviant or a thrill for men. The juxtaposition of the two images; me exposed and vulnerable versus me in a suit with a Foster's, I think, works well to reflect this sentiment.’ 

 

 

Pervert* is an exploration of the term through a queer lens, taking an experience of hate crime and reclaiming this through drag and character building. The series pokes fun at outdated misconceptions of queerness by exaggerating its stereotypes in a playful way.
